500 Outdoor Gyms Using Containers
At the weekly cabinet press meet, co-cabinet spokesman Ramesh Pathirana said to the reporters that The Sri Lankan Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to open 500 outdoor gyms using containers at a cost of Rs 625 million to “inculcate an active lifestyle” in Sri Lanka’s youth.
Further briefing about the initiative Pathirana said the government decided to make this move under the theme ‘Let’s win’ to inculcate an active lifestyle in the youth and provide a catalyst for progress in the field of sports. A professional gym trainer will be present in each outdoor gym. This outdoor gym project aims to cater to 100,000 members and 5,000 professional athletes each year. The responsibility of running these outdoor gyms will be delegated to youth and sports clubs at the local level.
The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal made by Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa to implement the outdoor gym project in the period 2021-2022. Accordingly, the construction of 250 outdoor gyms is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.
